EMR stands for Endoscopic Mucosal Resection, a minimally invasive medical procedure used to remove abnormal or precancerous growths (lesions) from the digestive tract lining. During EMR, an endoscope equipped with specialized instruments is inserted through the mouth or anus to reach the lesion. A solution is injected beneath the lesion to lift it away from the underlying tissue, and then a snare or other cutting device is used to remove the lesion. EMR is commonly used to treat large or flat polyps in the colon and rectum, as well as early-stage cancers or pre-cancerous lesions in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. It is an effective alternative to surgery for selected patients and can help prevent the progression of pre-cancerous lesions to invasive cancer. EMR is generally safe, with low rates of complications such as bleeding or perforation.
